Feb. 13 — Song of the Day

As you know by now, my song choices are often tied to daily news events in a loose way, but I do attempt to explain my reasoning. One of the biggest news stories today is that the Senate unexpectedly voted to call witnesses in Donald Trump’s impeachment trial and that Democrats — just as abruptly — decided not to call the primary witness they had touted. They are, however, having that witnesses statement entered into the record. Because of this, I started thinking about fitting songs. The one that immediately sprung to mind is Phil Collins’ much loved hit “In the Air Tonight.” Despite urban legends stating that Collins wrote the song after witnessing a drowning, he has stated that it wasn’t written with the intent of a particular message. Nevertheless, it has the wonderful line, “I was there and I saw what you did, I saw it with my own two eyes.” It also has the proper sense of foreboding and chaos that surrounds the impeachment trial.

One of my local papers is reporting that the Chico City Council voted to remove the city attorney. That got me thinking about songs celebrating lawyers. Of course, I came to probably the best song ever written in reference to the profession, Warren Zevon’s “Lawyers, Guns and Money.”

Today, the Senate voted to continue with a second impeachment trial for former President Donald Trump. At the request of my friend Dan Lewis, the Song of the Day is: “Let’s Impeach the President” by Neil Young.

The big news in my world today is that the Critics Choice Awards nominees were announced. Full disclosure: I am a voter in the film branch. It’s a particularly big day for Netflix because that studio received 72 nominations across the film and TV categories. The next-closest studio was HBO/HBO Max, with 24 nominations. So, how can I choose anything but AJR’s “Netflix Trip” as my Song of the Day?

Today, the Wall Street Journal reports that some taxpayers should file early in order to receive the largest possible COVID-19 stimulus payment. This got me thinking about songs that celebrate speed. I settled on the Miranda Lambert hit, “Fastest Girl In Town,” even though she is using the word “fastest” figuratively.

Feb. 5 – Song of the Day

Often, vice president of the United States is seen as a neutered political position because vice presidents have little say in day-to-day policy decisions and implementation. That changes significantly, however, when you have an evenly divided Senate, as we do in 2021. One of the big news stories today is that Vice President Kamala Harris cast the tiebreaking vote on a budget resolution that paves the way for Democrats to deliver a COVID-19 relief bill with a simple majority of votes in the legislature. In these situations, when the Senate is deadlocked, the vice president does have substantial power, and it’s easy to imagine a lot more closely contested votes moving forward. Now, that you get the news hook, I submit to you the Song of the Day, Joe Walsh’s “Vote for Me,” a 1992 anthem where he announced that he would be running for Vice President and declared a passion for issues ranging from “education” to “realization.”

Today, it’s being reported that the consulting firm McKinsey & Company has agreed to a $573 million settlement for its role in the opioid epidemic. My song for Feb. 4 is a little-known meditation on the despair caused by both opioid addiction and general systemic oppression. Although “S.O.S. (Sawed Off Shotgun)” may seem like a bubbly rock anthem on the outside, the lyrics remind that things are not OK. Thanks to the Canadian band The Glorious Sons for demanding that people of all nations peel back the surface.

The big entertainment news today is that “The Crown” and “Mank” lead all Golden Globes nominees. This got me thinking about how obsessed many are by the idea of royalty (just check out the number of movies, TV shows and gossip columns devoted to the topic), which got me thinking about the fantastic 2013 song “Royals” by Lorde.

Today, Natalie Hanson-Ross, a fine reporter at one of my local news outlets, the Enterprise Record, did a story noting that the cleanup of homeless encampments is continuing in Chico, CA. This is happening amidst ongoing concerns that the pandemic is increasing homelessness nationwide. Concerns about the complex issue of homelessness were in the news long before the pandemic, of course, and the great grunge rock band Pearl Jam spoke to them in the 1991 anthem “Even Flow.”

One of the biggest news stories for this fine Monday is that Donald Trump has found replacements for the lawyers that left him over the weekend, apparently over differences in plans for his impeachment defense. This isn’t what Jackson Brown was mulling when he wrote “Lawyers in Love” way back in 1983. But the song is a longtime favorite.
