Feb. 16 — Song of the Day
The big news today is that massive storms are pounding much of the U.S., clogging roads and leaving many without power. I don’t think this is the type of problem the boys from Styx were reflecting on when they recorded “Snowblind,” but it’s a great song nonetheless.

Feb. 14 – Song of the Day
It’s Valentine’s Day, and my youngest son, Will, notified me that it is also Weezer Day … noted because this is the 29th anniversary of the band’s formation. Weezer isn’t noted for love songs, but the ultra-catchy “(If You’re Wondering if I Want You To) I Want You To” is about courtship. Plus, I love it … and I get to choose. Happy Valentine’s Day music lovers!

Feb. 13 — Bonus Song of the Day
My first Song of the Day for Feb. 13 was published before the Senate determined the outcome of Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial. As expected, he was acquitted, with only a handful of Republicans breaking ranks. So … it seems appropriate to add George Harrison’s “Not Guilty” as a bonus. Originally written for the Beatles White Album, the tune didn’t make the cut and was released years later.

Feb. 13 — Song of the Day
As you know by now, my song choices are often tied to daily news events in a loose way, but I do attempt to explain my reasoning. One of the biggest news stories today is that the Senate unexpectedly voted to call witnesses in Donald Trump’s impeachment trial and that Democrats — just as abruptly — decided not to call the primary witness they had touted. They are, however, having that witnesses statement entered into the record. Because of this, I started thinking about fitting songs. The one that immediately sprung to mind is Phil Collins’ much loved hit “In the Air Tonight.” Despite urban legends stating that Collins wrote the song after witnessing a drowning, he has stated that it wasn’t written with the intent of a particular message. Nevertheless, it has the wonderful line, “I was there and I saw what you did, I saw it with my own two eyes.” It also has the proper sense of foreboding and chaos that surrounds the impeachment trial.

One of my local papers is reporting that the Chico City Council voted to remove the city attorney. That got me thinking about songs celebrating lawyers. Of course, I came to probably the best song ever written in reference to the profession, Warren Zevon’s “Lawyers, Guns and Money.”

Feb. 11 – Song of the Day
Today’s song is a bit self indulgent, but the big news in my world is that I am another year older. Aging has its downsides, but I frequently say that it beats the alternative. This isn’t my original idea, but it is a philosophy I try to live by. I also try to listen to great guitar playing whenever I can, so “Happy Birthday Blues” by B.B. King seems like the perfect tune for this fine Thursday.

Feb. 10 — Song of the Day
I actually forgot to post a song for Feb. 10, so this one is a makeup. Sorry! One of the big news stories Feb. 10 was that scientists are increasingly convinced that COVID-19 will be with us forever. That’s a depressing thought, so I thought I might soften the blow with a song that looks at the bright side of forever. I give you “Forever,” a 1985 hit by Kenny Loggins.
