New service offers free show tix in Reno

With prices to concerts and special events rising while incomes are declining, free show tickets sound pretty good, and Bill Nagel says he’ll get them for you.

Nagel is the local operator of House Seats (www.houseseats.com), a Las Vegas-based company that now gives subscribers the opportunity to claim free tickets to concerts and sporting events in Northern Nevada and Northern California. The catch? Members pay a subscription fee ranging from $89 to $169 per year, and tickets are handed out on a first-come-first-served basis. The $89 level entitles subscribers to two tickets per show and the $169 level comes with four tickets. There’s no limit on the number of shows a subscriber can attend.

Musings on a Motley Crue show

Somewhere in the middle of Wednesday’s Mötley Crüe concert at the Reno Events Center I realized that a Crüe show isn’t really about the music. Not only does the band sound vastly superior on CD, but with a recording one is able to close his or her eyes and imagine all this objectifying of women and shouting at the devil is the brainchild of angst-ridden 20-somethings rather than the middle-aged rockers the band has become.

But I digress. A Crüe concert today is clearly about “the experience.” So rather than bother with the traditional review, I decided to simply provide observations from the Crüe experience.

  • If Hinder wants to keep opening for classic rock bands, it needs to cultivate at least three more hit songs.
  • When bass and drums are played loudly enough, they might actually kickstart your heart.

Martin Short in Reno today (Jan. 31)

Jiminy Glick and Ed Grimly will be at the Silver Legacy on Saturday night, and they’re bringing Martin Short along for the ride. Or maybe it’s the other way round. With Short, an actor who immerses himself in every role, it’s tough to tell.

In Reno, Short — and his many characters — will deliver a showcase smacking of everything from Broadway to sketch comedy.

Self help guru says snap out of it

    Adrianne Ahern

    Adrianne Ahern

Dr. Adrianne Ahern says people are often their own worst enemies, and many don’t even know it.

The scratch golfer who can’t move to the pros. The accomplished writer who suffers from blocks. The actor who gets jitters before auditions. Ahern, a Reno-based psychologist, says anyone can overcome such troubles by simply re-wiring their brains, and she’s developed a system to help.

    ‘Pajama Game’ lively in Reno

Modern musicals are dandy, but they are rarely as charming as Golden Age Broadway works. Like classic film, vintage musicals are a reminder of an earlier, less cynical age. Yet, when well-staged, they feel fresh and relevant thanks to live performance.

The national touring production of “The Pajama Game,” which opened a three-day run at Reno’s Pioneer Center Friday, is particularly well-staged. Everything from set changes to curtain drops are timed to perfection, and the musical numbers feature dazzling Mark Minnick choreography.

    ‘Pajama Game’ opens in Reno

After a month of vacation, Crystal Kellogg, star of the national touring production of “The Pajama Game,” said she and her cast mates are eager to get back on stage. The show took a break for the holidays and is springing back to life on Friday in Reno.

“When we get in, we’ve got about a five-hour rehearsal we’re doing,” Kellogg said. “I think that we’ll have a good run in Reno. It will be like we’re performing it for the first time all over again. Everyone is pretty excited about it.”
