World Music Series hits Reno July 8

The Wailing Souls will play in Reno July 8.

The Wailing Souls will play in Reno July 8.

For years, the Food Bank of Northern Nevada presented a July world music series that ranked among the most popular activities at Artown. So, when the Food Bank decided to try something different, Artown staff stepped in.

“We’ve taken over,” Artown executive director Beth Macmillan said. “It’s a very relevant genre that needs to be offered to the community. I think it really introduces our community to different cultures through the arts.”

That means Wingfield Park will once again play host to world music shows at 7 p.m. each Wednesday. As in the past, admission will be by donation, but this year, cash offerings will help pay Artown’s concert costs.

‘Mamma Mia!’ heading to Reno

Mama MiaMichelle Dawson says you needn’t love ABBA to have a blast at “Mamma Mia!”

“Once you’ve seen it, you become an ABBA fan,” said Dawson who stars in the touring production of the musical, opening Tuesday at the Pioneer Center. “I mean the songs are incredible. “I don’t think people realize how popular and famous these songs are if they’re not an ABBA fan.”

“Mamma Mia!” is mostly a showcase for the music of the Swedish pop group. But that doesn’t mean it’s plot-free. Dawson plays Donna Sheridan, a freewheeling single mother who runs a hotel on a Greek island, and the show begins as her daughter, Sophie, is about to get hitched. Trouble is, Sophie wants her father to walk her down the aisle and Donna doesn’t know who the Daddy is. After some investigation, Sophie invites three men from Donna’s past to her wedding, convinced she’ll be able to figure out who is who. Add the arrival of two of Donna’s longtime girlfriends, and the stage is set for a wild musical comedy and a whole bunch of ABBA tunes.

“We had 350 events last year,” Artown executive director Beth Macmillan said. “We have 400 unique events this year, and we’ve cut back on our ticketed events.”

Reno Philharmonic names new music director/conductor

Laura Jackson

Laura Jackson

The Reno Philharmonic has hired Laura Jackson as its new music director and conductor, and executive director Tim Young says she was the favorite not only of the search committee but of orchestra musicians and the public. She is also the first woman to hold the orchestra’s top artistic post.

“I feel ecstatic,” Jackson said. “I really do. It’s often hard to sleep because I have so many ideas percolating in my head. Every piece I hear now, every piece I listen to, I think, ‘Oh my gosh, I want to do this.’ “

Young said the orchestra’s search committee found each of the five finalists impressive, but it was Jackson who made the biggest impression.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo ready for Reno

mambazoLadysmith Black Mambazo won its second Grammy in February, and spokesman and original member Albert Mazibuko sees this as the ultimate honor.

“That’s amazing,” he said. “That’s the best thing that ever happened to the group, because if you talk about the Grammy, there’s no other award in the world that’s above it. That kind of recognition in the world, it’s great. It’s so wonderful.”

Renoites can catch the South African vocal group fresh off its win when it plays the Grand Sierra Resort on Sunday. The concert is a rare non-summer offering by Reno’s Artown festival.

Bassist Edgar Meyer playing in Reno

Edgar Meyer

Edgar Meyer

The Reno Chamber Orchestra has been bringing out-of-area soloists to Northern Nevada for most of its 35-year existence, but few have more impressive credentials than bassist Edgar Meyer, who will be featured with the group Saturday and Sunday.

“He certainly is one of the greatest soloists that we will ever play with,” said Scott Faulkner, executive director and bassist with the Chamber Orchestra. “Both in terms of notoriety and just ability, he certainly is at the top of the pile, right up there with the best that have ever played with us. That’s not an overstatement at all.”

Faulkner became one of Meyer’s admirers when he was just a young player studying bass in college.

“I remember the first time that I heard a recording of him,” Faulkner said. “I was like, ‘Oh, my word.’ I couldn’t believe it.”
