Feb. 27 – Song of the Day

Today, President Joe Biden is calling on the Senate to rapidly approve the $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief package that was passed in the House. While Congress goes through the sometimes daunting approval process for such things, millions of Americans continue to struggle. Because of this, I can think of no better Song of the Day than the Beatles’ 1965 song “Help!” Here’s hoping relief makes it to those who need it in short order.

When Rage Against the Machine wrote “Testify,” the band was pretty clearly thinking about the U.S. government’s willingness to sacrifice lives for political goals, including greater access to foreign oil. Although the circumstances of the song do not perfectly match details surrounding the horrifying death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, the outrage seems more than appropriate. Today, declassified intelligence shows that the U.S. has long believed his assassination was ordered by the Saudi Crown Prince. Yet the U.S. government response was nil. “Testify.”

Today, the House passed the Equality Act, which if it clears the Senate, will prohibit discrimination based on sexual identiy. Although George Michael was yet to come out as gay when he released the 1990 hit “Freedom!” the lyrics hinted at the truth, and the song serves as a testament to the importance of being one’s self.

The FDA says that Johnson & Johnson’s COVID vaccine appears to be safe and effective, paving the way toward availability of a third option. Considering all the bad news we’ve had in the last year, optimism seems appropriate, so I give you Howard Jones’ 1985 hit “Things Can Only Get Better.”

Feb. 23 — Song of the Day

Today, America is reeling from news that the nation has lost about as many people to COVID-19 in one year as died in combat during the entirety of the first and second World Wars. This is staggering and heartbreaking, and no song can speak to the enormity of the moment. So, all I can do is choose one of the more beautiful rock songs ever written about loss, Better Than Ezra’s “A Lifetime.” The song is appropriate because it addresses the pain of loss while stressing the importance of honoring the wishes and memories of a deceased loved one. Here’s to the memory of those who have died and hope for better outcomes in coming months.

Song of the Day – Feb. 21

Dr. Anthony Fauci, on Sunday, said that Americans need to remain vigilant even though COVID-19 cases are, at last, declining across the United States. That makes “Don’t Let Your Guard Down” by Nils Lofgren the ideal Song of the Day. The song comes from Lofgren’s 2019 album “Blue With Lou.”

The biggest news story in my feed today seems to be that Texas is continuing to struggle from the impact of a massive winter storm. Power outages combined with freezing weather have created widespread disruptions to water supplies. It’s easy to take our electrical grid for granted and forget about all the bad things that can happen when our energy supply is disrupted. So, the Song of the Day is “What’s On Your Mind (Pure Energy)” by Information Society. The lyrics are about romance and communication, but it’s impossible to listen without focusing on the sample of the great Leonard Nimoy repeating the words “Pure Energy.”

Big news in my feed today is that NASA’s Perseverance rover is on Mars and ready to search for ancient life. That said, Machine Gun Kelly’s “Concert for Aliens” seems an apt Song of the Day.

A story today says research is piling up indicating that two hours outdoors may be the new 10,000 steps. In simple terms, time spent outdoors seems to have a remarkable impact on human mental and physical health, and the pandemic makes this clearer than ever. Few musicians were better at celebrating the natural world than John Denver, so I give you “Rocky Mountain High.”
